DP World looks to Rwanda

January 25 - DP World has been granted a 25-year concession to develop and operate a new logistics centre in Kigali, Rwanda.

The greenfield concession agreement will see the first phase of the project built on 90,000 sq m of land, with a 12,000 sq m container yard and a 19,000 sq m warehousing facility.

The Kigali Logistics Platform (KLP), which will cost an estimated USD35 million to develop, is forecast to have an annual capacity of 50,000 teu and 640,000 tonnes of warehousing space when completed.

Although the facility will mainly cater for containerised cargoes, international media reports suggest that the centre will also be able to store and handle various breakbulk cargoes.

DP World says that Rwanda aims to enhance the country's logistics industry to support the export of products for regional and international markets.

The terminal operator added that its partnership with the Rwandan government is further strengthened by the country's economic transformation in recent years, consistently delivering over 7 percent GDP growth, and today ranked as the most competitive country in East Africa by the World Economic Forum's global competitiveness report.
