Lower Saxony port developments in the spotlight

Inke Onnen-Luebben, managing director of Seaports of Niedersachsen GmbH stressed the need for investment in infrastructure in ports as well as in the port hinterland connections and seaward approaches.

Pressures on public resources has led to significant investments in all nine ports from the private sector said Onnen-Luebben.

Lower Saxony's Minister of Economic Affairs Olaf Lies stressed that Lower Saxony is currently realigning its ports policy so that all of the ports on Germany's north coast work together to strengthen the effectiveness and competitiveness of the network overall and invited all the representatives present to engage in a joint dialogue to draw up perspectives for the future.

Uwe Beck Meyer as Maritime Coordinator of the Federal Government also stressed the importance of ports as powerful logistics hubs for German business.

In regards to investment, he said that there is a need to share the burden between the federal and provincial governments since the north coast ports are important to the whole of Germany.
