July 7 - Barneveldse Kraanverhuurs (BKV) has invested in a new 600-tonne capacity Liebherr LR1600-2 crawler crane.

BKV will use the crane, which can lift 85 tonnes at a maximum boom length of 156 m and radius of 16 m, mainly for the installation and decommissioning of wind turbines, said the Dutch crane hire company.

The Liebherr crane's crawler tracks each weigh 38 tonnes and have a width of 2 m. In order to transport the massive crane to a jobsite, at least 50 trucks are needed when in full configuration, said account manager Onno Mauritz. On site, a mobile crane is also required to rig the crawler.

As the hub height of turbines increases, along with the weight of nacelles and rotors, BKV explained the need for a new and larger crane when working in the wind energy industry.
