October 27 - Earlier this year, Austrian crane and heavy haulage contractor Felbermayr utilised three Liebherr LTM 1750-9.1 mobile cranes for the erection of 13 Enercon wind turbines in Styria, Austria.

The project site was located in a region of medium-height mountains in the south of Austria, close to the border with Slovenia, at an altitude of 1,700 m.

Felbermayr transported the turbine components to the project site along winding, steep forest tracks.

The blades, which weigh around 10 tonnes each and are approximately 40 m long, were loaded onto a bladelifter, which is mounted on eight heavy-duty axles, and is able to raise the blade secured to it by up to 60 degrees.

Weighing in at 108 tonnes, the 750-tonne capacity Liebherr cranes also had to negotiate tight bends and gradients of up to 20 percent to reach the project site. According to Günter Wimmer from Felbermayr's project department, "each crane took around one hour for the 7 km journey up to the site."

The three LTM 1750-9.1 cranes, one of which was provided by Kran Seller, the Deggendorf, Germany-based heavy haulage contractor, were equipped with telescopic extensions, luffing lattice jibs and Y-guying for erecting the turbines.

At 69 tonnes, the generators were the heaviest gross loads for the mobile cranes, says Liebherr. They were installed on the towers at a height of 80 m.
