Geodis Wilson leads logistics support for Panama Canal expansion
October 5 - Further to our report on August 31 (Sarens set to ship new Panama lock gates), Geodis Wilson, the freight forwarding and heavy lift specialist of Geodis, has advised that it is the lead contractor in the USD50 million contract awarded by steel manufacturer Cimolai to manage the transport of the 16 lock gates of more than 4,000 tonnes for the expansion of the canal.
Geodis Wilson has confirmed that the first vessel, carrying four gates, will depart in February 2013, followed by three more shipments throughout next year.
The project is scheduled for completion in December 2013 with the new gates part of an expansion plan initiated by the Panama Canal Authority that will most likely double the capacity of the Panama Canal by 2014.
"Being a key provider in one of the world's most demanding infrastructure projects is underlining both, our outstanding competence in heavy lift shipments as well as our significance in the global ocean freight
business", commented Pierre Blayau, chairman and ceo of Geodis Group.
The new lock chambers will enable post-Panamax containerships to cross the canal.
Geodis says that a dedicated engineering team led by Geodis Wilson Italy's Industrial Projects department has developed a unique lashing system to secure the gates safety during transport, which will be via semi-submersible vessels from Italy to Panama.
In addition, Geodis says that the inland transport, loading and unloading operations will be coordinated by Geodis Wilson, in cooperation with Sarens and STX Pan Ocean.
HLPFI understands that Cimolai will be responsible for the installation of the lock gates.
