Jan De Nul has contracted Huisman to design the main crane for its newest offshore wind turbine installation vessel, Voltaire.

The Huisman leg-encircling crane will be built at the company’s production facility in Xiamen and features a lifting capacity over 3,000 tonnes.

Huisman said the crane will able to support the future developments of the offshore wind energy industry. The turbines in this sector are likely to measure more than 270 m in height, with blades measuring up to 120 m in length, when the installation vessel enters service in 2022.

As HLPFI reported here, the vessel will be built by China’s Cosco Shipping Heavy Industry.
