May 6 - A Liebherr LR 11350 crawler crane has erected a 170-tonne pre-formed ring liner during the construction of reactor block 3 at the Kakrapar nuclear power plant in the Indian state of Gujarat.

The giant ring liner, which is owned by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL), had a diameter of around 50 m and a height of 5 m, and was probably the largest single structure to have been lifted by a crane in India, suggested Liebherr.

Initial plans required the 16 ring segments to be hoisted individually to a height of 50 m before being assembled and welded together, but since the NPCIL-owned Liebherr LR 11350 was already on site and due to its large load capacity, NPCIL decided to assemble the ring on the ground and lift it into position in a single hoist.

The LR 11350 has a load capacity of 1,350 tonnes and was fitted with an S main boom, luffing jib, derrick system and a ballast trailer for the job.

The heaviest load lifted by the Liebherr model on the Indian site was a generator which weighed in at 400 tonnes at a radius of 44 m.

NPCIL owns three Liebherr LR 1650 cranes, two LR 11350 cranes, three LTM 1140 cranes and one LTM 1250-6.1 crane.
