July 27 - A 1,088-tonne CA01 module that will house a number of major components has been installed at the first of two new nuclear plants at the VC Summer site in Jenkinsville, South Carolina.

This is the first Westinghouse AP1000 module of its kind to be placed in the USA and it is the heaviest lift completed on the VC Summer construction site so far, says SCANA Corporation subsidiary South Carolina Electric & Gas (SCE&G).

A 170 m high heavy lift derrick crane was used to lift the massive module, which serves as a multi-compartment steel structure within the Unit 2 containment vessel. The module measures 27.4 m long by 29 m wide and has a height of 24.3 m.

Once the two 1,117 MW units at VC Summer are complete, SCE&G anticipates that its power generation mix will be around 30 percent nuclear, 30 percent natural gas and 30 percent scrubbed coal, as well as hydro, solar and biomass.
