August 2 - Rapid Response Solutions (RRS) has overseen the lifting and transport of three bespoke carbon composite masts for a superyacht at Trafalgar Wharf in Portsmouth, UK.

RRS was contracted by Magma Structures, which designed the masts, to lift the units out of the building and transport them overland, ready for delivery to their overseas customer. The masts measured around 60 m in length and weighed approximately 30 tonnes each.

"Lift planning was extensive and involved hours of meetings with designers," explained RRS managing director Paul Barber.

"The site is challenging in its layout and is not ideal for lifting and moving objects of this size. With all three masts varying in size, weight and centre of gravity, each lift had to be looked at completely separately."

RRS used its KranXpert software to create a 3D plan of the lift, before employing a 150-tonne capacity Liebherr LTM 1150-6.1 crane from Ainscough Crane Hire and a 130-tonne capacity LTM 1130-5 from Marsh Plant Hire to execute the lift.

A Modulift MOD110 spreader beam and a number of Straightpoint load cells were also used during the lifting operations.

The first two lifts have taken place, while the third and final lift is scheduled to take place in mid August.
