Modulift supplies for subsea installation

Modulift has refurbished two subsea spreader beams to lift 260-tonne and 280-tonne manifolds for an oil and gas project, offshore Libya.


 

The standard Modulift SUB 380 beams could handle 380 tonnes at an outreach of 9 m; at a lower capacity the reach can be extended to 16 m.

Modulift re-rated the working load limit and dynamic amplification factor (DAF) of the spreader beams and drop links. 

Chris Schwab, account executive at Modulift, explained: “The principle reason for refurbishing the beams was so they could be reused on another project that required an additional strut to achieve a new span, and they needed to be re-rated to a higher capacity, yet lower DAF.”

Modulift manufactured 0.95 m
-long struts for each beam. It conducted extensive testing on the welds, as well as on each beam’s lifting capacity. 

The manifolds, fabricated in Ravenna, Italy, were transported to the project site offshore Libya by barge. To load the manifolds on to the barge, Modulift supplied a MOD250/400 spreader beam and associated rigging to connect two cranes in a tandem lift operation.

For the offshore installation,
the refurbished SUB 380 spreader bar was connected to the manifold’s rigging arrangement with synthetic slings and shackles.
