April 28 - Szczecin based Best Logistics has assisted in the delivery of a 475-tonne gas turbine and 450-tonne generator for a new power station at the Orlen refinery in Plock, Poland.

Having signed a logistics and transport contract with Siemens for the oversize delivery, Austrian heavy lift and transport specialist Felbermayr executed the majority of the move from Germany to Poland using its own SPMTs and hydraulic gantry crane.

In addition, Haeger & Schmidt International handled the inland shipment in Germany; HSW Logistics assisted with the vessel and sea freight to Poland; while Best Logistics was responsible for port handling at Gdansk and Plock, and the shipment via the river Wisla.

Best Logistics explained that the river transport was the most challenging part of the supply chain, since the river is not regulated and only has sufficient water levels in spring time.

In addition, Best Logistics told HLPFI that there were no heavy-duty pontoons available on the Wisla at the time of transport. The company was required to hire barges from Germany, which had to be shipped to Gdansk.

According to Best Logistics, the gas turbine was the heaviest piece of cargo ever moved on the Polish river. However, Hermes has since claimed that it performed the heaviest ever delivery via the river in cooperation with Fagioli, which involved the transport of four reactors, each weighing in between 800 to 1,300 tonnes.
