Kamag set to electrify Wiesel range

German manufacturer of heavy-duty vehicles Kamag, part of the TII Group, has partnered with Alelion Energy Systems in the development of autonomous vehicles powered by lithium-ion batteries.

Kamag has placed an order with Alelion for high-voltage batteries to electrify the powertrain of one of its heavy truck models - an interchangeable lifting truck for logistics yards, the Kamag Wiesel.

“This order is an important milestone and proves that Alelion also plays a central role when it comes to the electrification of heavy vehicles,” said Daniel Troedsson, ceo of Alelion.

As part of a joint development project, Alelion will deliver a first batch of batteries in 2018. The remainder of the order, valued at approximately SEK15 million (USD1.7 million), will be delivered during 2019.

“More and more vehicle manufacturers are investigating the possibilities to convert to sustainable, all-electric powertrains due to environmental and climate issues,” added Troedsson. “Our long experience with lithium-ion technology in the forklift industry puts us in a good position to design the power supplies of tomorrow and contribute to the electrification of the heavy vehicle industry.”

Kamag’s planned electrified truck, according to Alelion, is a multipurpose vehicle to be used with semi-trailers and for transporting goods in ports, warehouses, production sites, and airports as well as mail and package handling sites.

TII Group said that DB Schenker has been the first logistics service provider worldwide to test the automated Wiesel. The interchangeable lifting truck from KAMAG has been designed for the handling of swap bodies on logistics yards.
