Finland's VG-Shipping, part of the Meriaura Group, has acquired two 4,100 dwt dry cargo vessels.

Measuring 89.8 m long, the 1A ice-class vessels are suitable for shipments in the Baltic and North seas.

The acquisition is part of Meriaura Group’s strategy to increase its tonnage by self-owned vessels or long-term charter agreements.

Beppe Rosin, vice managing director and responsible for Meriaura's charter operations, said that the carrier wants to better serve its clients in the 3,000-4,000 dwt range, as well as customers in the 8,000 dwt range. “The acquired vessels strengthen our market position in the smaller size class."

According to Meriaura, the vessels, Aava and Lotta, can also be used for the transport of project cargoes.

VG-Shipping took delivery of the first vessel in October; the second vessel will be handed over in the coming weeks.
