Best powers ahead in Poland

December 12 - Best Logistics, part of the Felbermayr group of companies, has coordinated the delivery of a Siemens generator stator from Mülheim, Germany to the Jaworzno power plant site in Poland via the Oder river.

Weighing in at 476 tonnes including the shipping frame, Best explained that the stator was the heaviest single item ever to have been shipped on Poland's Oder river, which is often not sufficient to navigate with deep draught barges.

After being loaded onto the German barge Joliba at the Siemens site, the stator was shipped via inland waterways to Opole in Poland, where it was loaded onto a 32-axle Schnabel railcar belonging to Felbermayr.

According to Best Logistics, the oversize unit was also the heaviest piece to have been transported on Europe's public railways.

The stator was delivered to its destination by rail - a journey that took two days to complete - before being unloaded at the power plant using a hydraulic skidding system.

While Best Logistics managed the project delivery, a number of other Felbermayr group companies were involved in the transport, including Haeger & Schmidt International and Felbermayr Transport.
