Norwegian Forwarding and AIF join forces

Norway-based Norwegian Forwarding and China-based AIF Global Logistics have recently joined forces to handle the movement of an out-of-gauge (OOG) shipment from Shanghai, China to Fredrikstad, Norway.

The shipment comprised submarine optical fibre cable drums that had a combined weight of 50 tons (45.4 tonnes), and were carried on one 40 ft and one 20 ft flatrack container.

AIF Global Logistics handled the Customs and port formalities, and secured an ATA carnet.

As there is no direct service between Shanghai and Fredrikstad, the cargo had to be transhipped via the port of Rotterdam, the Netherlands. In Rotterdam, the 40 ft flatrack was rolled out twice due to heavy congestion at the port.

Due to heavy congestion at the port, Norwegian Forwarding had to find an alternative way to deliver the heavier 40 ft flatrack. The drums were shipped by barge from Rotterdam to Eemshaven. From there, the components were loaded on board a feeder coaster vessel as breakbulk cargo to be transported to the final destination, Harstad.

The other 20 ft flatrack arrived in Norway via the port of Rotterdam - as per the original plan - and was transported by rail to the end destination.

The components will be used in offshore oil activities in the northern part of Norway.
