Silk Way extends European network

Silk Way West Airlines has reintroduced scheduled Boeing 747 freighter flights to Budapest, Hungary, from its hub in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The first flight landed at Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport on March 18, 2018.

Silk Way said the new service, which was cancelled two years ago, is part of its European expansion strategy that has also seen the carrier integrate Vienna and Kiev into its network. Silk Way, which said that it currently operates ten B747Fs, expects to add two more to its fleet in due course.

"The new flight creates additional export opportunities for the Hungarian industry, and through the international network of Silk Way West Airlines not only the main cargo hubs of Western Europe become accessible for its partners in industry and logistics, but markets in the Middle East and Asia too," said René Droese, director property and cargo at Budapest Airport.

Wolfgang Meier, ceo at Silk Way West Airlines, said the company has seen increasing demand for scheduled services to and from Eastern Europe. "In the spirit of the ancient silkroad, we want to facilitate this growth by providing regular shipping opportunities to Central Europe as well as into the booming Middle Eastern and Asian markets with the establishment of this connection" said Meier.
