June 24 - DHL Global Forwarding has signed a contract with aircraft manufacturer Airbus to provide transportation of A319, A320 and A321 aircraft components, along with general cargo, from the Airbus production site in Hamburg to its final assembly line i

DHL will provide a multimodal transport solution with air, ocean and road freight services beginning in 2015.

Due to the fragile nature of the aircraft components, the transportation process is a challenging one, says DHL. The parts will be fixed on specially designed transport racks, and abrupt movements will need to be avoided.

The agreement between Airbus and DHL comprises of general cargo, which will be shipped via air and ocean freight, and major aircraft components including rear fuselage, forward fuselage, wings and the tail fins.

The major components will be shipped via coaster vessel from the Airbus site in Hamburg to Bremerhaven, where they will be loaded onto a container liner shipping service. On arrival in Mobile, Alabama, the cargo will be trucked to the final assembly line at the Mobile Aeroplex in Brookley.
