August 4 - Cosco Shipping Co. Ltd. (Coscol) has signed a contract with CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding for the construction of a 50,000 dwt semi-submersible vessel.

The new semi-submersible vessel is scheduled to join Coscol's fleet in 2016, at which point the company says it will own three vessels of this type.

The vessel will be 216.7 m long with a breadth of 43 m, and will be equipped with a DP2 system. It will be capable of carrying almost 90 percent of the oil drilling platforms and large offshore engineering products in the world, claimed Coscol.

According to reports in the international media, the vessel will be used as part of Coscol's work on development of the Yamal LNG project in Russia.

HLPFI reported on July 11 that wholly-owned Coscol subsidiary, Coscol (HK) Investment and Development Co., had signed a contract with Guangzhou Shipyard International Co. for the construction of a new 90,000 dwt semi-submersible vessel.

Coscol said that it has enlarged its fleet with six semi-submersible vessels comprising a total deadweight of 210,000 tonnes, which has helped it to become the world's second largest semi-submersible vessel operator.
