January 18 - The port of Antwerp handled 208,423,920 tonnes of freight in 2015 - the first time in the gateway's history that it has seen volumes of over 200 million tonnes per year.

The port handled 4.7 percent more cargo in 2015 than 2014, which saw cargo volumes of 199 million tonnes.

Ro-ro cargo at the port rose by 4.1 percent year-on-year to reach 4.6 million tonnes in 2015, while conventional breakbulk volumes also grew around 1.2 percent year-on-year to reach 10 million tonnes.

The port of Antwerp's container sector showed particularly strong growth, with the number of containers handled increasing by 7.5 percent compared with the previous year.

The port's overall gross tonnage in 2015 was up 9.7 percent on the previous year, with a record 367 million tonnes of cargo passing through the Belgian gateway.
