Arctic station shipped by air

February 16 - Chapman Freeborn Airchartering and logistics partners GAC Norway and POLOG have delivered a pre-fabricated Arctic research station to northern Greenland.

The airlift involved transporting 210 tonnes of cargo to Station Nord on 17 Antonov An-12 charter flights out of Longyearbyen, Norway.

Just 924 km from the North Pole, the scientific outpost is accessible only by air. Sea ice and average temperatures of -14°C and lows of -50°C in the winter make it almost impossible to reach by supply ship.

When complete the new research facilities will monitor Arctic air pollution.

Kim Borgaard, regional sales manager Scandinavia at Chapman Freeborn comments: "Inclement weather conditions and the remote location of Station Nord made the operation a challenge from the outset."
