Armitt handles ship unloaders

April 3 - In the UK, the Armitt Group has successfully managed the removal of two 1,050-tonne ship unloaders from the former Tilbury power station located on the River Thames, east of London.

After a lengthy planning phase, Armitt project-managed all operational communications, vessel agency and chartering.

"From the initial draft surveys of the berth, through lashing and securing systems and the engineering calculations, notwithstanding the stringent requirements for the lashing and welding teams, Armitt worked to propose the most economic and efficient solution that met the strict criteria of the client," said Nicholas Marshall, commercial director at the Armitt Group.

"The self-propelled modular transporters (SPMT) were supplied by Mammoet and worked efficiently with both machines clearing the ground pretty much as expected, with water bags only required for one of the lifts."

Armitt chartered Hansa Heavy Lift's HHL Tokyo to transport the machines to the Netherlands for demolition.

On arrival in the Netherlands, a suitable tug and barge combination was chartered to enable the transhipment alongside the Waalhaven port before final delivery to the demolition facilities.

So, with two consecutive voyages, four lifting operations, four lashing operations, and four port calls all went to plan and not even Storm Doris could ruin the party.
