BNSF Logistics takes the crown

November 5 - The Houston Global Project Centre of BNSF Logistics has handled the shipment of a 175-tonne crown from the port of Philadelphia to its final destination in Howell, in the state of Michigan.

The crown, which was over 24 ft (7.3 m) long, was discharged from an NYK vessel that had come from Japan directly onto a 20-axle trailer for the transport overland to a sheet metal stamping plant.

The lengthy overland move was necessary as a liner service along the St Lawrence Seaway was not available.

The tractor-trailer combination was 372 tonnes in weight and 205 ft (62.5 m) long, 13 ft (3.96 m) wide and 14 ft (4.26m) high. BNSF Logistics' senior vice president Willy Hoffmann described the project as a very complex move, coordinating multiple state and DOT escorts along the route. He added that the load was delivered on time with zero damage in a journey that took seven days to accomplish.

BNSF Logistics is the exclusive USA member to the Worldwide Project Consortium (WWPC).
