Depth shipping index shows improvement

September 24 - Australia headquartered Depth Logistics - a 4PL specialising in the transportation of project and heavy cargoes worldwide - has released its shipping index for August 2013, identifying a significant increase in heavy machinery import number

The index reports that after an extended period of uncertainty, machine volumes rose from 2,764 in July to 4,914 in August 2013, up 78 percent. The increase was mostly from public works equipment that accounted for 55 percent of the total imports.

Freight on board value, however, fell from AUD298 million (USD279.46 million) to AUD226 million (USD211.94 million) during August, down 24 percent, says Depth Logistics, adding that the number of mining machines fell slightly in August in comparison with July 2013, although the number of bulldozers imported into the country increased from 23 in July to 31 during August.

According to Depth Logistics, the months leading to end of the year usually show some increased import activity. Moreover, the company adds that the expectation among investors is that the change in government in Australia is likely to improve confidence and spur growth in the mining industry.
