December 11 - The Port of Fremantle in Western Australia is seeking expressions of interest from the private sector to build and operate a new automotive and ro-ro terminal at its Victoria Quay.

According to the port, Fremantle is Western Australia's largest automotive and ro-ro gateway, handing 120,000 vehicle imports and 180,000 tonnes of other ro-ro cargoes annually.

Fremantle Ports' ceo, Chris Leatt-Hayter, stated the port's automotive and ro-ro trades had grown at average annual rates of 8 percent and 10.6 percent respectively over the past 10 years, and that "the strong growth is forecast to continue, driven by Western Australia's high-performing economy and fast-growing population".

Leatt-Hayter explained that a new terminal at Victoria Quay presents an exciting opportunity to serve those fast-growing markets: "Fremantle Ports' aim is to develop capacity to ensure the port can service shipping lines and importers in a way that is comparable with leading automotive and ro-ro terminals internationally."
