March 10 - Maersk Line has revived the once well-known Farrell Lines brand, an American shipping line with deep history in the African trade, writes Kirsten Shepherd.

Founded in 1925, Farrell Lines operated a cargo service between the USA and South and East Africa. P&O Nedlloyd purchased Farrell in 2000, and was then purchased itself by the Danish shipping company in 2005 taking Farrell Line with it.

Maersk Line recently reflagged Alliance Beaumont and Alliance Charleston, two ro-ro ships now in US colours to operate the new service along with Alliance St Louis and Alliance Norfolk.

Höegh Autoliners and its US affiliate, Alliance Navigation on behalf of the US government and commercial customers will join with the four Farrell ships to operate a joint service.
