October 2 - PD Ports is seeing positive results from a group-wide safety suggestion scheme launched last year and aimed at finding practical and cost effective solutions for further improving the safety of the company's working environment.
Suggestions put forward by individuals and groups of employees were appraised quarterly by PD Ports' Divisional Safety Committee, with the most practical and cost effective suggestions being rewarded with GBP500 in high street shopping vouchers.
The winning entries from each quarter have been considered at the annual review of the Group Health & Safety Committee and David Robinson, PD Ports' group chief executive officer and Russ McCallion, PD Ports' group human resources director, presented the overall winners with their share of the GBP2,000 annual award - pictured below.
The winning suggestions came from David Weller and Karl Nash, who are based at Teesport, as well as Colin Ling, Andy Hargreaves and Colin Wilkinson, who are all based at PD Ports' Humber operations.
One of the winning safety suggestions was the use of magnetic LEDs or reflective strips to highlight loads on mobile equipment when in motion during hours of darkness. A second was a device aimed at improving the process of separating steel billet and cargo when loading and stowage to ensure safer practice for operatives. One of these suggestions was also commended as excellent by customer, Corus.
