Liege to invest in cargo capacity

December 29 - Media reports suggest that Belgium's Liege Airport will invest EUR50 million (USD59.95 mn) in new cargo facilities during 2018 to cater to an increasing number of freighter flights.

The reports suggest that some EUR30 million (USD35.97 mn) will be invested in the development of four new parking areas for large aircraft. The gateway announced in November 2017 that it would provide a further 20,000 sq m of space for cargo operations at a cost of EUR20 million (USD23.98 mn).

HLPFI reported in October 2017 that AirBridgeCargo Airlines (ABC) introduced a freighter call at Liege, following the imposition of slot restrictions at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, the Netherlands. Since June 2017, Air China Cargo has been running a weekly flight between Shanghai and Liege, and will increases rotations during 2018.

Speaking in November, Luc Partoune, ceo of Liege Airport, said: "First, the global cargo business is undergoing general growth driven by good economic performance in Europe, but also by the emergence of new niches driven by e-commerce. And the saturation of Amsterdam airport has changed the situation."
