February 9 - Abu Dhabi Ports handled more cargo in 2014 than ever before, with a 37 percent year-on-year rise in general and bulk cargo.

"The volume of general cargo has more than doubled over the last four years," said ceo of Abu Dhabi Ports, Captain Mohamed Juma Al Shamisi. "This is directly linked to the size and number of infrastructure and oil and gas projects in the Emirate."

Abu Dhabi Ports explained that Zayed Port handles the majority of the Emirate's steel imports and exports, as well as a large percentage of the project cargo shipments.

Moreover in 2014, the Free Port set a record for its largest ever shipment of project cargo as five heavy units for the Takreer Carbon Black project, weighing a total of 29,492 freight tonnes, passed through the gateway. Read more about this shipment here

Containers handled at Abu Dhabi Ports also showed a rise, reaching 1,137,679 teu in 2014 - an increase of 26 percent compared with 2013.
