July 27 - Rhenus Group has purchased the inland waterway activities of Compagnie Française de Navigation Rhénane (CFNR).

A spokesman for the company confirmed that Rhenus' French subsidiary has not acquired the whole of CFNR, but only its inland waterway activities and part of its fleet of river vessels and barges.

"With this acquisition, we are aiming to strengthen our business activities in northern and eastern France, and along the Rhine and Moselle rivers," said Rhenus Port Logistics ceo Thomas Maassen.

This acquisition follows Rhenus' takeover of CFNR subsidiary, Serbian terminal operator and inland waterway transport logistics company CFND, in February 2015 to expand its operations on the Danube.

Reports in the international media suggest that Rhenus' most recent takeover of the French company's fleet marks the end of CFNR's operations, but this has yet to be confirmed by either party.
