July 13 - The ports of Seattle and Tacoma have welcomed the passing of a USD16.2 billion transportation investment package that aims to speed the movement of cargo through Washington state's ports and freight corridors.
The package includes funding for the key freight routes of state route 509 in King County and state route 167 in Pierce County, which Port of Tacoma commission president Don Johnson says will help keep and grow jobs throughout Washington state.
Port of Seattle commission co-president, Courtney Gregoire, added that this investment package will give farmers, manufacturers and other businesses an efficient transportation system to reach global markets.
The transportation package also included a number of other investments to move cargo to and from ports faster, including improvements on Interstate 5 at Joint Base Lewis-McChord and on Interstate 90 in Snoqualmie Pass. In total, the state will invest nearly USD3.25 billion in projects that service the Puget Sound gateway.
