Volga-Dnepr Airlines has handled the urgent transportation of an 8-tonne engine, measuring 3 m wide, using one of its Ilyushin Il-76TD-90VD freighters.

Volga-Dnepr delivered the replacement engine from Paris Orly airport to Lajes airport, located on Terceira Island in the Azores, where an Air Caraïbes Airbus 330-323 had made an emergency landing due to an engine malfunction.

A second Il-76TD-90VD flight transported the damaged engine back to Orly for maintenance works and restoration.

The Air Caraïbes request called upon Volga-Dnepr’s new aircraft on ground (AOG) service, which was launched recently to manage the delivery of urgent spare parts to aircraft stranded around the world.

“Being an air cargo operator ourselves, we understand the importance of a timely, effective, and traceable solution for customers facing an AOG situation,” said Robert van de Weg, vice president for sales and marketing at Volga-Dnepr Group.

As part of the AOG service, once a request is received, all related Volga-Dnepr departments are placed on alert, ready to activate the necessary coordination and approval of all the flight preparation stages, including loading confirmation, airport slots, and gaining traffic rights approvals.
