January 28 - SOHAR Port and Freezone has received three new post-Panamax ship-to-shore gantry cranes from Chinese crane manufacturer ZPMC.
Oman International Container Terminal (OICT) officially took delivery of the cranes, which represent a multi-million dollar investment in the future of SOHAR as the new gateway to the Gulf.
Each of the cranes has a 52 m reach, meaning that they can handle very large containerships.
Once the cranes had reached the terminal, rail tracks were laid so that the cranes could be manoeuvred from the ship's deck to the quayside.
With the three cranes installed and container operations consolidated at the new Terminal-C facility, OICT will more than double its current capacity, says SOHAR, with a target of 1.5 million teu a year.
"The new cranes will keep SOHAR ahead of our competitors for many years to come. The growth in SOHAR is frankly mind boggling and there are still massive opportunities for international investors, especially in SOHAR Freezone," said Andre Toet, ceo of SOHAR Port.
