BMS calls on Enerpac for historic move

Danish heavy lift specialist BMS Krangården has used an Enerpac EVO multipoint synchronised lifting system to move a 120-year-old lighthouse.

Located on the northwest coast of Jutland in Denmark, the 700-ton (635-tonne) Rubjerg Knude lighthouse needed to be moved 70 m inland to protect it from coastal erosion.

BMS opted to lift and move the lighthouse, which measured 23 m high, in one piece rather than dismantle it brick by brick.

The company inserted 24 high-tension steel rods underneath the lighthouse. These were then attached to a custom-built steel frame with concrete anchors.

16 Enerpac HCR-200 185-ton (167.8-tonne) capacity cylinders were then installed under the steel frame to lift the lighthouse.

The EVO multipoint synchronised lifting system controlled the cylinders, while two 45-ton (40.8-tonne) capacity jacks pushed the tower along a pre-laid track.

The operation took six hours and will ensure that the lighthouse is safe from coastal erosion until at least 2060, said Enerpac.
