August 25 - Mammoet has been awarded the heavy lift contract for a petrochemical complex expansion project in Johore, Malaysia by a Korean engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor.

As part of the contract, Mammoet Malaysia will provide heavy lifting services for the expansion of the complex, including the installation of new reactor vessels weighing up to 650 tonnes and measuring over 100 m tall.

Due to the existing infrastructure within the petrochemical complex, Mammoet explained that there will be limited space for the lifting operations, with a low pipe rack around the construction area making it difficult to position the large reactor units.

In light of the site constraints, Mammoet has decided to employ one of its PTC 35 ring cranes to execute the heavy lifts.

The large crane has a capacity of 1,600 tonnes with a long reach and small footprint, which the company says will enable the oversize units to be installed directly from a main road and lifted over the pipe rack.

"Less movements on site results in reduced risks, reduced costs and a faster completion, reducing the overall time-to-market for our client," said Roel Wesel, manager of solutions at Mammoet APAC.
