May 12 - Mammoet has successful lifted a 120 m tall crane for its installation in the Port of Szczecin, Poland.

The Goliath crane was built by Van Haagen Kraanbouw in the Netherlands and transported to Bilfinger Mars Offshore's fabrication site at the Polish gateway. Mammoet constructed its own 127 m tall bespoke gantry crane - the tallest ever built by Mammoet in Europe - to execute the project.

This project was unique because the load - the Goliath crane - was assembled around the gantry before it was raised into place. Mammoet's gantry was at the centre of the construction and was used to lift Goliath onto its legs.

At this stage of construction the Goliath crane weighed 1,200 tonnes. Its four legs were tailed while Goliath's main crane girders were raised by the gantry; this introduced the challenge of dealing with four additional points affecting the forces on the gantry and its stability.

Goliath is now one of the largest gantry cranes in Europe standing over 120 m tall, weighing 1,800 tonnes, with a lifting capacity of 1,400 tonnes.  Bilfinger will use the crane to support the fabrication of steel offshore foundations including transition pieces, jackets and monopiles and to load them onto pontoons.
