October 2 - SAL Heavy Lift has officially launched its marine projects department, based at the company's headquarters in Hamburg, Germany.

The team, which will be lead by SAL's head of projects Sune Thorleifsson, is dedicated to complex heavy lift shipping and marine installation support.

The launch follows the closure of SAL's offshore business unit, due to the challenging offshore market conditions and reductions in projects worldwide, as HLPFI reported here. SAL's offshore activities will be handled by the marine projects team.

"Marine projects is a natural evolution of services for which SAL is already well known," explains Thorleifsson. "We are essentially back to our roots as a one stop shop. We are a heavy lift specialist offering a diversified portfolio of services."

Aside from Thorleifsson, Julia Wildt and Mike Grant will be part of the team, who together have more than 60 years of experience in serving oil and gas, renewables, salvage and civil work projects, says SAL.

A branch office will be established in Rotterdam, the Netherlands where Erikter Horst, Matthieu Moerman and Michiel Rijkaert will be based.
