AN-225 delivers vital supplies

Antonov Airlines’ AN-225 Mriya freighter has delivered 100 tonnes of medical supplies from China to Warsaw, Poland, which will aid in the fight against Covid-19.

The AN-225 departed Tianjin airport on April 13 loaded with medicines, masks, protective equipment and samples requiring laboratory analysis. In total, 1,000 cu m of cargo was loaded aboard the freighter.

The aircraft stopped at Almaty airport in Kazakhstan to refuel, before continuing on to Poland.

The flight, chartered by Chapman Freeborn, was the first for the AN-225 since being modernised. It now features upgraded control systems and LED lighting equipment.

Vitaliy Shost, Antonov Airlines’ first deputy director said: “Our company is very proud of the opportunity to join the fight against the global pandemic. Planning and performing charter flights in the current difficult quarantine conditions … when there are restrictions applied for landing and crew rest permits, requires selfless dedication and commitment on the part of all airline staff – from commercial personnel and ops planners in the office to pilots and technicians on board.”

Since the end of March, Antonov Airlines has carried more than 1,400 tonnes of humanitarian aid and relief cargoes from China to countries in Europe, the Americas and the Middle East.
