CMA CGM executes Scallywag

CMA CGM has been tasked with shipping a 29-tonne racing yacht from Australia to the USA.

The container shipping line was approached in August 2018 to ship Scallywag 100 from Sydney to Savannah, USA. The shipment itself took place on January 14, 2019, after the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.

Scallywag 100 measures 35.04 m in length and 5.8 m wide. It was transported on a bespoke cradle aboard the 2,257 teu Seatrade Orange containership, which operates on CMA CGM’s Panama Direct service linking Oceania to the US East Coast and Northern Europe.

Scallywag 100’s boom, mast and dagger boards were removed for shipment; the racing yacht and these components were secured on 18 40 ftflatracks on deck. The loading operation took three hours to complete. It took another two hours to lash the cradle to the flatracks, the hull to the cradle, and the flatracks to the ship's structure.

The lifting, stowing and lashing operations were completed with the racing yacht team on hand. Together with the shipping line’s surveyor, they were there to guide the CMA CGM team to ensure that all slinging, lifting and lashing was completed appropriately.

Seatrade Orange will sail for 35 days via the Pacific Ocean, through the Panama Canal and the Caribbean Sea, en route to Savannah.
