Florida’s Orion Marine Group has started installing the 413 concrete piles for Port Canaveral’s multipurpose cargo berth.

Canaveral Port Authority approved construction of North Cargo Berth 8 (NCB8) in January 2018, as HLPFI reported here.

Scheduled for completion in mid-2019, NCB8 will handle a growing portfolio of heavy and oversized cargo, including commercial spacecraft components.

Once the 90 ft (27.4 m) long concrete piles have been placed, construction will start on a seawall.

The 900 ft (274.3 m) seawall and planned 100 ft (30.5 m) pier extension will be capable of handling an 850 ft (259 m) ship, says the port.

NCB8 will be constructed with a 2,000 lbs per sq ft (9.8 tonnes per sq m) capacity, a necessary requirement for handling aerospace cargo and other heavy modules, says the port.
