Crowley Maritime has completed the tow-out of Shell’s Appomattox semi-submersible floating production system (FPS) from Kiewit Offshore Services' construction facility in Ingleside, Texas.

Using its Ocean Sky and Ocean Sun tugboats, Crowley transported the platform through the Aransas Channel on behalf of Heerema Marine Contractors.

The tugs were then disconnected before providing escort services for transport to the deepwater installation site.

Once at the site, the tugs were reconnected to provide positioning support, enabling Heerema to attach the Appomattox FPS to its mooring spread.

The hull of the Appomattox platform arrived in Ingleside from Geoje, South Korea late last year onboard Cosco Shipping Specialized Carriers’ heavy lift vessel, Xin Guang Hua. Weighing 40,335 tonnes, the hull was the largest and heaviest piece of cargo transported by Cosco's fleet of semi-submersible vessels to date.
