Illinois passes USD45 bn construction bill

The US state of Illinois is to spend USD45 billion on the construction and refurbishment of roads, sewers, schools and parks over the next six years.

On signing the bill, Illinois Governor Jay Robert Pritzker said: “Together we passed the largest, most robust capital plan in this state’s history. We are investing USD45 billion over six years to fix what is broken and repair what is needed.”

USD33 billion has been earmarked for transportation projects, while state facilities will receive approximately USD4.3 billion worth of investment. In total, USD4.7 billion has been allocated to environmental and educational projects.

The necessary funds for the state-wide plan will come from a combination of tax increases and legislation changes.
