Townsville enhancing ro-ro capabilities

The port of Townsville, Australia, has started construction work on a AUD2.5 million (USD1.62 million) project to extend the secondary wharf at berth 10. The extension will enable to gateway to handle larger ro-ro vessels.

The port of Townsville’s general manager infrastructure and environment, Marissa Wise, said the current wharf is too short to cater to car carriers with a 38 m beam or width.

Once completed, the secondary wharf will have a 55 m extension to accommodate the stern ramps of car carriers. Some of the works will be landside while the rest will be conducted from tug/barge/crane units. The works, which are being performed by Pacific Marine Group, should be finished by August 2020.

The gateway continues to proceed with a channel-widening project that should be complete in 2023, as HLPFI reported here.
