Ainscough raises the roof for Vinci

Ainscough Crane Hire has utilised a 300-tonne capacity crane to assist with the construction of intu Trafford Centre’s Barton Square in the UK.

On behalf of Vinci Construction UK, Ainscough lifted and positioned a glazing rig that will be used to install glass into Barton Square’s new dome atrium. The crane was rigged with 63 m of luffing jib to lift the structure into place.

The crane took five-and-a-half hours to build and de-rig, with the lift itself taking an hour and a half. When the glazing has been affixed to the steel frame of the dome, Ainscough will return to Barton Square to remove the glazing rig.

“Given the unusual shape of the glazing panels and rig, this lift required careful planning and skilful delivery,” explained Gary Rathburn, Ainscough’s Manchester depot manager. “Our team of operatives worked with Vinci to deliver the lift successfully overnight, ensuring minimal disruption to intu Trafford Centre staff and visiting shoppers.”

The job formed part of the GBP75 million (USD95.2 million) expansion of Barton Square, which will see the addition of a redesigned interior, a glass dome roof and more than 110,000 sq ft (10,219.3 sq m) of new retail and leisure space.
