SAL inks Horns Rev 3 deal

SAL Heavy Lift has signed a contract with Geosea that will see the Hamburg-headquartered shipping line transport 49 transition pieces for the Horns Rev 3 offshore wind farm.

SAL has been tasked with moving the transition pieces from fabrication yards in Aalborg, Denmark and Vlissingen, the Netherlands, to the port of Esbjerg in Denmark.

In a short timeframe, SAL said that had to prepare a full HSSE and quality plan, create the technical design, finalise the engineering work and execute procurement. The shipping line has also overseen the fabrication of five grillages and one lifting tool, while getting the vessel ready to load the first units.

Each transition piece measures 32.27 m in height, has a diameter of 7.12 m and weighs 530 tonnes. The project will start early July and run for approximately 65 days.

Philip Stackmann, project manager at SAL Heavy Lift, said: “With our ready-made designs for transition piece grillages and transition piece lifting tools, which can be modified to the specific needs of our clients, it was possible to meet the demanding requirements of our client.”

SAL Heavy Lift’s performance in the Hornsea Project One offshore wind farm project was one of the determining factors in its ability to secure this contract from Geosea, a part of the DEME Group.

Horns Rev is an offshore wind farm, which has been developed in three phases, and is located in the Danish waters of the North Sea.
