Triple lift for ALE

ALE has used its Mega Jack 800 system to jack up three ship-to-shore cranes, weighing 1,390 tonnes each, in Barcelona, Spain.

ALE was subcontracted by ZPMC to jack up the cranes to a height of 6 m at the Barcelona Europe South Terminal (BEST). This allowed the ship-to-shore cranes to be extended.

The Mega Jack 800 system features a high lifting capacity and small footprint, which allowed ALE to execute the jacking quickly while minimising site disruption to the ongoing activities at the terminal.

ALE used the Mega Jack 800, with 800-tonne capacity in each of the four towers, to perform the jacking in 12 stages. A jacking frame was also deployed to support the crane structure.

Elena Muñoz, project manager based at ALE's Spanish branch, said: "This was a challenging project, we had to work with low ground bearing pressures and on a congested site with multiple operations.

"By using the Mega Jack 800 we provided a quick and timely method that enabled us to complete the manoeuvres within the restrictions of time and site space, whilst avoiding any site disruption or delays."

The project took approximately two months to complete, finishing in December 2017.
