Wallenius Wilhelmsen Ocean (WW Ocean) has utilised its global network of liner services to transport an 80-tonne transformer from Thailand to Cartagena, Colombia.

The transformer, manufactured by energy giant ABB, was rolled onto WW Ocean’s vessel in Laem Chabang for transportation on the carrier’s intra-Asia service to Masan, South Korea.

To load the transformer in Laem Chabang, the port operations team used a Samson heavy lift trailer.

In South Korea, the transformer was loaded onto the Asia to North America liner service to Manzanillo, Panama before joining the South American route to its final destination of Cartagena.

At the ports of Masan and Manzanillo, the transformer was rolled off the vessel into a secure climate-controlled warehouse while waiting for the next leg of its journey.

“To transport this special and sensitive cargo it is very important to have handling expertise, including design options for each shipment,” explained Poomsit Khunsit, WW Ocean’s commercial general manager in Thailand.

“Our specialists analyse and design handling methods and equipment based on dimensions and weight to make sure the safest and most secure solutions are utilised. During ocean transportation, the heavy lift trailers are also lashed onto the deck to guarantee safe transportation.”

The total journey time from Thailand to Colombia was 59 days.
