Airland Projects moves African cargoes

January 15 - Airland Projects A/S of Denmark was recently contracted to organise the transport of 600 iron ore rail wagons from China to Sierra Leone.

Weighing 13,820 tonnes with a total size of 110,000 cu m, Airland Projects contracted five separate charter vessels to complete the project on schedule.

Airland Projects' staff were on hand in China to coordinate the movement to port, and to arrange Customs clearance, staging and loading of the wagons onto the chartered vessels.

Upon arrival in Sierra Leone, the wagons were unloaded onto offshore barges at sea, negating the need to call at the congested main port of Freetown. This move saved considerable time and cost for the client.

In other news, Airland Projects was contracted by a major European EPC company to provide logistics services for an ongoing mine expansion project in Egypt.

Part of the contract included the transport of 528 tonnes of mill segments from Johannesburg, South Africa, to the Egyptian jobsite - a critical, time-sensitive item required by the EPC client.

The consignment included pieces weighing up to 95 tonnes and measuring 6.9 m in diameter, which posed problems due to the limited South African road system.

According to Airland Projects, the trucking route to port was over 1,800 km. The transport was carefully planed and monitored to ensure that the over-dimensional cargoes arrived at the charter vessel on schedule. The Airland project team liaised with several government departments to ensure the transport was executed within the tight time frame set by the client.

The mill segments were safely loaded onto the charter vessel and delivered to the client on time and within budget.
Airland Projects is a member of the Worldwide Project Consortium (WWPC) network, representing Denmark.
