Heavy Lift Across the World

First for Melbourne terminal

A huge generator used at the Loy Yang 'A' power station in Gippsland, Victoria, Australia has been loaded onboard the multipurpose ship BBC Alberta at the port of Melbourne for shipment to Germany, where it will be repaired.

The 255-tonne generator had to be slowly trucked through Melbourne's eastern suburbs before arriving at the port of Melbourne. Overland transport was managed by leading Australian heavy lift and haulage company, Lampson.

The cargo was loaded at the Melbourne International RoRo and Auto Terminal (MIRRAT), a wholly owned Australian subsidiary of Wallenius Wilhelmsen Terminals Holding; BBC Alberta was the first general cargo vessel call at the terminal since it opened in 2016.

A spokesman for the terminal said that the handling of this cargo is significant for MIRRAT as it clearly demonstrates the terminal's ability to service market segments outside of its core focus of ro-ro vessels and car carriers.

The planning and execution to move the generator 200 km from the Loy Yang power station to MIRRAT was a sight to behold. The generator required a trailer convoy, which stretched over 100 m in length and consisted of six prime movers moving at a maximum speed of 20 km/h in a four-day journey.

You can see a video of the move here.
