Newcastle gets on the rails

Höegh Autoliners has moved the first six of a fleet of rail vehicles from Spain to Newcastle, Australia for the Newcastle Light Rail upgrade project.

The railcars, manufactured by Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF), were transported on Höegh’s liner service from Santander, Spain to Australia in partnership with deugro.

The carrier used its specially designed Höegh bridge to transfer the 33-m long railcars – shipped in two sections - from the rail-equipped semi-trailers on which they were transported, directly to its roll trailers for loading onto Höegh Jeddah.

According to Höegh, this eliminated the need to lift the cargoes at the loading and discharge ports.
