Tower cranes used for wind turbine installation

UK-headquartered heavy lift and transport engineering specialist ALE has been using two of its K1650L tower cranes to install wind turbines near Port Augusta, southern Australia.

ALE said that this is the first time that tower cranes have been used to perform wind turbine installation works in Australia. The K1650L was selected for the Lincoln Gap wind farm project due to its high wind speed tolerance and small footprint.

The crane’s compact footprint means the size of hardstand can be reduced by more than 50 percent in comparison with other cranes widely used in the wind energy industry, allowing cost and time savings in civil works, said ALE.

ALE has been contracted to install 14 of the 59 wind turbine generators at the Lincoln Gap project.

HLPFI reported in February 2019 that ALE installed 13 wind turbines in Thailand using the K1650L.
